Dark lenses ≠ protective lenses. We explain what the UV400 label really means.

In sunglasses, the real work is done not by tint but by the UV filter. The UV400 label means all UVA and UVB rays up to 400 nanometers are blocked.

Dark lenses dilate the pupil; without a filter, more UV enters the eye than with no glasses at all. That’s why boardwalk-stand sunglasses are riskier than bare eyes.
